Pillar One

Embodied Presence

Mindfulness practices that bring our energy and attention into the present moment have long been promoted as vital to the healing process. Many equate presence with meditation and can occasionally become discouraged by the difficulty in establishing a disciplined practice. At WellSoul, we emphasize the fact that there are many direct paths into the “here and now” and that finding what resonates most with you is an essential quest.

Our bodies are designed to detect and defend against threats to our social, emotional and physical survival. When challenging conditions activate pain in the body including fear, humiliation, grief, doubt and other difficult to tolerate emotions, our spirit is knocked from the body sending our energy and attention into either past or future time (reliving painful experiences, ruminating about what has transpired or anxiously anticipating and protecting against the potential unfolding). This experience of energetic disembodiment or dissociation, creates a separation from the self, diminishes our ability to attune to what is truly happening in the moment and limits access to the creativity needed for healing.

Consider what it is that helps you to call your energy into present time. Focus on things that truly bring you into contact with the moment versus activities that help you escape. Is it spending time in nature, connecting with friends, working with ahealer, playing on the floor with your child, yoga, thai chi, cooking, Feldenkrais, breath work, service, writing, gratitude, prayer or meditation? Do more of the things that foster presence. Let them nourish you. Give yourself permission to be in the here and now.

Pillar Two

High Frequency Intention

It’s amazing how much we accomplish without being specific about our intended course. Imagine the possibilities if we were to wake up every day naming the values we hope to align with, visualizing how we want to show up in relation to our experience and to everyone around us. Setting intentions is NOT about manifesting what we think we want, it is about creating from a place of integrity, truth, trust, love and acceptance of what is.

Intentions are meant to be embodied in the present. What this means is that we write them and visualize them as if we are already living and experiencing them in the here and now. If they become goals to accomplish, we push them into the future and risk not actualizing them.

What makes an intention “high frequency” is the degree to which we are considering that which is in the highest and best good of all concerned, and our willingness to be flexible and adaptable to life’s non-linear unfolding. It requires that we let go of attachments to how we think things “should” look and instead envision how we intend to relate to our experiences as we go through them. It is about being purposeful with our objective to embody trust, love, gratitude, flexibility, adaptability, courage, strength, compassion, empathy, joy and generosity.

Pillar Three

Focused Attention

Where we place our attention determines the quality of our life. Will we focus on worst case scenarios, be swept up by sensationalism or consumed by criticism and judgment—weakening our immune systems and diminishing our resourcefulness in the process? Or will we practice directing our attention, through our intentions, toward living in alignment with our values?

Ask yourself: Is the focus of my attention draining or enhancing my spirit and the spirit of others? Is my attention lingering in the past, projecting into the future or anchored here in this moment?

Research indicates that practices to focus attention utilize the power of the mind to rewire default modes in the brain, integrating regions otherwise impaired by experiences of trauma. This means that we have an enormous amount of agency when it comes to healing ourselves and breaking with old patterns that no longer serve us.

Attention is a muscle that must be exercised, and even the most disciplined among us get pulled off center, especially in moments of chaos. In our modern world, where space is limited and information abundant, it is reasonable for attention to drift. Perfection is never the goal. Our aim is to compassionately exercise our ability to return home to ourselves and gently guide our attention toward that which is useful, healing, of service and rooted in love.

Pillar Four

Neutral Awareness

Neutral awareness is the practice of extracting ourselves from the center of the metaphorical storm, zooming out for a bird’s eye view, and depersonalizing our experience. Neutrality does not mean that we don’t have an opinion about what’s taking place. It is however about replacing judgment with acceptance of what is.

Often, our emotional response to trauma or other adverse events leads to an over identification with suffering. This can make us cling to pain, perpetuating and prolonging victim consciousness even after the acute phase has passed. It can lead to black and white thinking, right making and wrong making and to polarizing behaviors that are either rigid or chaotic. In other words, we become consumed by the emotional experience and the fear-based narratives our unruly mind shapes around uncomfortable feelings.

Neutral awareness, also called “witness consciousness,” requires that we take a step back and ask: “What is my soul attempting to learn from this?” When we adopt a learning orientation to life, we grow, heal and change in ways that lead to greater freedom, joy, forgiveness, compassion and connection. There is real suffering on the planet, so it’s important that neutral awareness not be mistaken for some kind of “spiritual bypass.” It is not about escaping to la-la land. Neutrality is difficult and sometimes impossible to attain, especially in the midst of crisis. Often, we need support to get through the acute phase before we can get neutral.

Choosing to zoom out and practice neutrality empowers and motivates us to learn our lessons with greater ease. It also assumes there are greater energetic powers at work in our lives and that what we taste, touch, smell, hear and see in the physical world is only one dimension of our very complex reality. Neutral awareness alleviates suffering by making the most unbearable challenges yield meaning and purpose. It allows space for forgiveness and even gratitude once we have weathered a storm and emerged stronger and wiser.

Pillar Five

Wise Action

Wise actions are the conscious choices we make for the highest and best good of all concerned. We do not work on our spiritual psychological health for ourselves alone. In fact, evolving our consciousness is more about recognizing our interconnectedness and finding ways to serve the whole from a place of love than it is about feeling good.

How do we know what is for the highest and best good of all? When we come into the PRESENT, establish INTENTIONS for how we want to relate to our experience and to others, cultivate practices that FOCUS our ATTENTION on those intentions and ask ourselves what the learning opportunities are from a place of NEUTRALITY, we set ourselves up for knowing at a deep level what the next best choice is. This is WISE ACTION.
